Created by composer Gustav Mahler, the Hammer is essentially a large wooden mallet. The mallet strikes a wooden box to create a dull, resonating thud.

Notable repertoireEdit

  • Mahler, Symphony no. 6, last movement. The hammer strikes twice, and Mahler invented the hammer specifically for this symphony.
  • Maazel, The Ring without Words
